Strategic Defense
of Protected Areas
Protected areas are critical for the conservation of natural and cultural biodiversity. Likewise, the environmental benefits they offer are essential for the survival of humanity.
Environmental Justice
According to the Colombian National Unified Registry of Protected Areas (Registro Único Nacional de Áreas Protegidas –RUNAP in Spanish–), 122 national protected areas, 228 regional protected areas, and 993 local protected areas have been established, covering approximately 2 million hectares. However, these areas are in danger, especially due to mining (hydrocarbons, coal, gold) and indiscriminate logging.
Our organization specializes in the legal defense of these strategic ecosystems to ensure their conservation and a healthy environment.
We Protect Species
at Risk of Extinction
Colombia is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. 10% of the total species of the planet live there.
Colombia is classified as a megadiverse country.
Protection of Species
Unfortunately, more than 1,200 endemic species are at risk of extinction or vulnerable, without including species about which we haven’t been able to obtain data.
In the Magdalena Medio subregion, the San Silvestre Green corporation has identified several species at risk of extinction, such as the West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus), white-faced capuchin (Cebus capucinus), jaguar (Panthera onca), chavarri or northern screamer (Chauna chavaria), capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris), among others. They are threatened by the oil industry, landfills, and contaminated water sources, so we have initiated criminal and constitutional proceedings to protect their biological corridors and guarantee their survival.
Victims of
Environmental Impacts
The contamination of soils and water sources, caused by public and private companies, has impacted the livelihoods of the most vulnerable populations, such as farmers and fishermen.
Damage to the population
Consequently, these populations have been visibly affected by lower income and a worse quality of life, as fishermen catch fewer fish and farmers have to deal with a decreased production capacity in their lands.
The San Silvestre Green Corporation, committed to these communities, has initiated preventive sanctioning and criminal proceedings as representative of the members of the communities affected by environmental crimes. The corporation has effectively achieved remedies for civil damages.
