The San Silvestre Green Corporation filed a criminal complaint with the Attorney General’s Office against Terpel S.A. In this regard, the complaint is originated by the contamination of the El Zarzal stream. The complaint also includes other damages to natural resources. This is due specially to hydrocarbon discharge from the multinational’s fuel distribution plant. The most affected area is Barrancabermeja’s La Fortuna township.
Multinational TERPEL S.A. in trouble for environmental contamination.
It is important to highlight that the El Zarzal stream flows into the San Silvestre wetland. The wetland is the main supplier of water to Barrancabermeja’s aqueduct. For this reason, we insist on the importance of protecting the water to be consumed by the more than 200,000 inhabitants of the area.
Also, our corporation requested a sanctioning administrative investigation to the Environmental Authority. According to Law 1333 of 2009, Terpel S.A. is failing to comply with its environmental responsibility. This company had been discharging hydrocarbons, domestic wastewater, and hydrocarbon wastewater without prior treatment and without a discharge permit. We have requested Terpel’s environmental license in the area to be suspended. We also have requested the definitive and immediate interruption of these discharges.
Thanks to this complaint, CAS imposed a fine in the sanctioning process. Therefore, the oil company Terpel S.A. will have to pay COP 741,000,000 as a consequence of its conduct, which harms the environment. Click here to view Resolution DGL No. 00301 of August 6, 2020.
